Application scenarios of energy storage systems

There are various application scenarios for energy storage, which are applied on the power generation side, power grid side, and power consumption side. In some scenarios, energy storage systems become increasingly indispensable.



1. Power generation side




The main function is peak shaving. By using energy storage to achieve peak shaving and valley filling of electricity load, the power plant charges the battery during low periods of electricity load and releases the stored electricity during peak periods of electricity load.




Especially reflected in the photovoltaic and wind power generation scenarios in the new energy field. Changes in lighting intensity and duration, as well as changes in wind power intensity and duration, require supporting energy storage systems to improve the utilization of renewable energy, achieve smooth output power of new energy, reduce impact on the power grid, and improve the utilization rate of output power lines.




2. Grid side




Frequency changes in new energy generation methods such as photovoltaic and wind power can have an impact on the safe and efficient operation and lifespan of power generation and electrical equipment. The energy storage system can play a role in rapid frequency regulation. Installed upstream of the line, when the line is blocked, excess electrical energy can be stored in the energy storage equipment. When the line load is less than the capacity, it can be discharged into the line. By combining with a transmission and distribution system, the transmission and distribution capacity of the power grid can be improved through a smaller installed capacity, reducing the construction cost of transmission and distribution facilities.




3. Consumer side




The application of the power side is more extensive, and energy storage can be used as a backup power supply for high energy consuming enterprises, parks, important departmental organizations, or public places, improving power supply reliability. Such as government, hospitals, military command centers, public transportation systems, industrial parks, data centers, communication base stations, islands, ports, remote mountainous areas, etc. When a power outage occurs, energy storage can supply the stored energy to the end user, avoiding power interruption during the fault repair process and ensuring power supply reliability.




In addition, energy storage systems can help users better utilize photovoltaic power for self use. In the electricity market where peak valley electricity prices are implemented, charging the energy storage system at low electricity prices and discharging the energy storage system at high electricity prices can also achieve arbitrage of peak valley electricity prices.
