Energy Vault provides solutions for renewable energy storage, which is inspired by pumping storage power stations. In the system of pumping power stations, the electric power is generated by the underwater of the bottom through the turbine, and when the energy demand is not high, the water will be pulled back to a higher storage pool to reset the potential energy.
Energy Vault designed the system to change "water" to "brick". In this system, potential energy is stored in a huge concrete tower.
In order to "charge" this nearly 500 -foot tower (about 35 -storey buildings), they combined a six -arm crane, pulley, cable, and machine vision software. When the energy needs to be released, the crane only needs to put these bricks back to the ground. In the process, the kinetic energy obtained from the potential energy into electric energy.
The company said that the capacity of the concrete tower can reach 35mWh and the peak power can reach 4MW, which depends on their size. Although these towers look big and bulky, the crane can generate electricity in 2.9 seconds, and the energy efficiency of the round trip can reach about 90%.
Unlike the chemical storage system, once these bricks are piled up, their energy will not have the problem of "leakage" or degradation. In other words, Enegy Vault's concrete brick tower system will not degenerate with time. The company said that the life span of this system can be maintained between 30-40 years.
